Watching a dog lose the ability to walk is one of the most alarming experiences a pet owner can face. Whether it happens gradually over days or suddenly within hours, hindlimb weakness or paralysis in dogs is always a serious neurological event — one that requires prompt veterinary evaluation and, in many cases, rapid specialist intervention. The Most Common Causes of Paralysis in Dogs

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is the leading cause of spinal cord injury and paralysis in companion dogs. Early signs include reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or rise from rest; pain responses when the spine is palpated or the neck is moved; a tense, hunched posture; subtle changes in gait such as scuffing a paw or wobbling slightly during turns; and episodes of yelping or flinching without an obvious cause.

More advanced signs include clear weakness in one or both hindlimbs, knuckling (walking on the top of a paw rather than the pad), loss of bladder or bowel control, and complete inability to bear weight.
